Who Can Apply for PMP®?

The PMP® examination has specific education, project leadership experience and training requirements.

Under PMI's current July 2026 requirements, candidates can qualify through one of several education-and-experience pathways.

  • Completion of upper-secondary/secondary education
  • Minimum 60 months / 5 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects within the past 10 years

Associate-Level or Vocational Qualification

  • Recognized associate-level, higher-certificate or advanced technical/vocational qualification
  • Minimum 48 months / 4 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects within the past 10 years

Path 3

Bachelor's Degree or Higher

  • Bachelor's degree or higher from a recognized institution, or an eligible bachelor-equivalent professional qualification
  • Minimum 36 months / 3 years of non-overlapping experience leading projects within the past 10 years

Path 4

PMI GAC-Accredited Degree

  • Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI Global Accreditation Center-accredited program
  • Minimum 24 months / 2 years of non-overlapping project leadership experience within the past 10 years
Training Requirement

In addition, PMP® candidates generally need at least 35 hours of project management training aligned with the PMP® Exam Content Outline, subject to PMI's current rules.

An active CAPM® certification can provide credit for the training-hour requirement when the other eligibility requirements are met.

Important
